Review:Den Of Sorrows by Quinn Loftis

The Romanian and Serbian Canis lupus rest in an uneasy peace. One of their own, Sally Miklos, the young and powerful gypsy healer, aids Perizada in her quest to defeat Volcan, a long forgotten nightmare returned to our world. These two packs watch as their brothers across the world, wolves from Spain, Ireland, and America, join their own forces in the battle against the evil dark fae. At the same time, the packs hope against hope that their presence might reveal a mate bond between a pack member and one of the five recently discovered gypsy healers.
While Jacque and Jen miss Sally, their longtime best friend, they have bided their time dealing with their own domestic issues. Jacque and Fane are anticipating the birth of their first child and Jen and Decebel face the challenges of caring for an infant. Both girls are eagerly awaiting Sally’s return, and have Perizada’s word that she will be back in time for the birth of Jacque’s baby.
Vasile and Alina, the Alpha pair of the Romanian pack, are enjoying this time of peace. But Vasile did not become the most powerful Alpha in centuries by being a fool. He has lived long enough to know that there is always another battle on the horizon. As long as evil exists in this world, his race must step forward and stand in the gap, shielding those who cannot protect themselves. But the battle he is anticipating is bigger than he could have ever imagined.
As Perizada has recently discovered, creatures of the night that have for so long remained hidden from the human realm, have slithered from their underground lairs and begun preying on the young and innocent. The high fae has declared war, and she expects Vasile and his wolves to be the ones to carry out the attack. The Alpha is more than happy to oblige. But with his first grandchild on the way, and the gift of five vulnerable healers coming under the wolves’ protection, he understands that he must be very careful not to place any of them in harm’s way.
Such is the job of the Alpha, protector, and provider. He and those he leads must stand as sentinels and warriors to safeguard those they love, and the humans who know nothing of the supernatural world. It will be their job to destroy the creatures that threaten to expose them all. And if they fail, the world as they know it, both human and supernatural, will never be the same.

Mrs. Loftis has a knack for drawing you into the world of her characters and throwing you on an exciting roller coaster of emotions. I laughed and cried along with the characters, felt their worry, joy and love, and was reminded though I walk through trails and it seems I have no purpose, the Creator is still using me and my time isn't up yet.I must endure alittle longer and I'm never alone.
I went in knowing our beloved wolves and their friends were up for a fight. The girls' banter kept the humor alive while they faced an heartbreaking atrocity long hidden come to light. Now they are in a race to find and rescue the innocents while trying to keep each other safe, keep the love between mates alive as others fight the darkness waiting for their mate, and protecting their own pups from the evil that abounds in the human world threatening to expose the supernatural to the human world. Some are fight for love, some are fighting for sanity, some are fighting for justice, but all will fight for survival.

Character Bio:

Harmony McKaley Miller.jpg

Harmony Phillips: 5’2” tall. Hazel eyes that are blue, green, with a hint of violet in them. Hair: has been described as “living wood polished to a high shine” ~ ash, oak, cherry and mahogany. Her birthday is June 1st.

Harmony was adopted as a baby. She has never really considered who her birth parents are because her adoptive parents are so wonderful and loving. Sadly, Harmony was born totally colorblind in society where magik is based on colored wavelengths of light. She can’t see or do any of it. Because of her disability she has been bullied, picked on and left out of a lot in school, but it hasn’t stopped her from still looking for the best in people.
Harmony fully expects to join the “Normal” world someday because she can’t see magik. So when something happens and she starts to see color and do magik, she accepts it as a miracle and is grateful. She just wants to enjoy the change with her family and best friend/boyfriend Tesch. She never dreamed of the danger it could bring to her life and certainly never wanted anyone to be hurt by it. She is loving and honest to a fault. Expecting people to be the same, she never anticipates cruelty or lies from others. It makes her naive, her biggest downfall. .

Tesch (Teschandarian) Wight: 6’0” tall, Eyes: Jade Green, Hair: Black

Tesch is a Siren, he has Fae magik which is in the yellow spectrum. He is also an orphan who lives with his guardian, Mr. Wight. He has been Harmony’s best friend and self appointed protector since first grade. He’s been in love with her for years even if Harmony doesn’t realize it. Tesch feels like he has been ‘on his own’ all his life and is not as forgiving or innocent as Harmony. He knows people are not always what they pretend to be. While he has powers and can do magik, he deliberately refrains from doing very much magik around Harmony. He doesn’t want her to feel bad that he can when she can’t. Tesch doesn’t like anyone who picks on Harmony and has come to think of Harmony’s home and parents as his own. He’d do anything to keep the Phillips family safe and sound.

SARAH4.jpgSarah Phillips: 5’0” tall, Eyes: Warm Brown, Hair: Red (long)

Sarah is a former witch of the green spectrum. When she married her husband Charlie, she had to give up her powers. Intermarriage between color powers is not allowed. as Harmony says “You can take the magik out of the witch, but you can’t take the witch out of the woman.”
Sarah has her own business, raising farm fresh vegetables and selling them to ‘green’ grocers. She loves her husband, her daughter and her plants, in that order. She prayed to Gaia for a miracle to restore Harmony’s color vision, hoping that she might share her craft and potion skills with the next generation. Very practical, she is the calm center of this family group and handles the changes in Harmony’s life with the optimism of discovery.

rugged charlie.jpg

Charlie Phillips: 6’4” tall, Hair:Blond, Eyes:Blue

Charlie gave up being a were-lion for love. He has all the red magik he needs when he runs his fingers through his wife’s hair. By profession, Charlie is a college professor of American History. He is quite content with his life, wife and daughter and doesn’t need or want things to change. When changes do happen he is more cautious about the new events. His love of history has taught him that while change is not necessarily bad or evil, it can be painful for those going through it. He feels his role is to guide his family through change as wisely as he can.

Challen Parks- Cody Lindley.jpg

Challen Parks: 6’1” tall, Hair: Blond, Eyes: Blue Grey

Challen Parks has been the bane of Harmony’s life since she was a little girl. An alpha were-wolf, he was always the first to bully and make fun of her. Only when Harmony stands up to him, (and accidentally glamours him) is he forced to face his true feelings about her.
Being confused and conflicted have made Challen a real jerk, but he will have a chance to redeem himself.

Joliet Combs: 5’8” tall, Eyes: Dark Brown, Hair: Dark Brown

Joliet is the social scene Queen. The girl everyone wants to know or be. She is one of two djinni’s at McLoud High School and the only daughter of the Mayor. Spoiled, pampered and powerful she befriends Harmony when she first manifests Fae magik. Harmony describes Joliet as “vain at times, even narcissistic, but with the mind of a born prosecuting attorney.” Joliet is only being a friend so she can spy on Harmony for her parents. When Harmony learns this, she realizes how lonely Joliet is, trapped by the circumstances of her birth and gives her a second chance on the condition of complete honesty between them. It remains to be seen if Joliet can live up to Harmony’s terms of friendship.

Mr. Bellfwigg 4’11” tall, Hair: balding Eyes: Brown

Mr. Bellfwigg is Harmony’s vice principal. He also takes on the role of Fae magik tutor and mentor when Harmony’s powers begin to develop. Harmony thinks he is a gifted teacher in the way he uses visualization to help her learn magik. She is a bit disturbed when she also learns that Mr. Bellfwigg belongs to a secret political group called the Wizened This group is dedicated to bringing all paranormals back into the fold of their society, including mixed blood and half-breeds. The Wizened strongly opposes the Paranormal Council’s ban on intermarriage and mixing of color powers and has been waiting for centuries for a champion to take on the Grey Cloaks.

Madame Osza.jpeg

Madame Osza: Height: unknown (she is in a wheelchair), Eyes: One dark brown, one serpentine, Hair: Silver

Madame Osza is the first mixed blood paranormal Harmony knowingly encounters. She is the fortune teller for a carnival, part lamia *seer) and a very wise woman. She tells Harmony’s future with her deck of tarot cards. It is not a future Harmony is sure she wants. The question is, can she escape her fate or is she destined to be more than just a small town paranormal girl.

Grey Cloaks:  Height, hair and eyes varies

These are the paranormal world’s ‘boogeymen’. Soldiers and henchmen for the Paranormal Council, they enforce the strict laws on racial mixing and keeping the paranormal world a secret from “Normals”.  There is only one punishment. Death.

...The pounding in my heart floods my ears, drowning out all the other noises around me. On the dusty mounds, barely ten feet from us, stand an army of demons. I recognize a few of the brooding, steely scowls on the ghouls, goblins and jezebels.
“An army of Darkness,” Roman murmurs.
The sea of creatures part, allowing a figure to swim through them. A Revenant Ghoul, front and center, steps aside as Micah strides forward, taking his place. I shake my head. Revenant Ghouls are prime warriors that lack any blood bond—in other words, a hostile demon without a lease. I frown at Micah. His large, emerald eyes watch me with an intensity that accentuates the emptiness behind them. Strands of silky, caramel hair fall loosely from his ponytail, framing his face. Then he smiles...

Heartless Book Blitz

Title: Heartless
Author: Kelly Martin
Genre: YA Paranormal
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR
Blurb: Who is really the monster?
For thirteen years, Gracen Sullivan dreamed about a red-eyed demon named Hart Blackwell who tortured her every night. Her mother freaked when she found out about her daughter's "hallucinations" and forced Gracen to go to the doctor, who prescribed some very powerful medication which kept Hart out of her head for five years.
A week ago, Hart came back and brought a friend.
But something has changed, and Gracen is seeing Hart when she's awake too. And the other "friends" in her dreams? They have been found dead.
The police want to talk to her.
Her boyfriend has become distant.
Her dreams are becoming more and more intense.
Hell wants her.
Heaven has to stop her.
When push comes shoving, can Gracen fight the evil eating away inside her or will she be forced to embrace it and destroy the world?
Kelly Martin writes paranormal, contemporary, historical, and YA fiction. She has been married for over ten years and has three rowdy, angelic daughters. When she's not writing, she loves taking picture of abandoned houses, watching horror gamers on YouTube-- even though she's a huge wimp-- and drinking decaf white chocolate mochas. She's a total fangirl, loves the 80s and 90s, and has a sad addiction to paranormal TV shows. {Basically, she likes creepy stuff.} Her favorite characters are the very flawed 'good guys'--and 'bad guys' who don't know they are evil. She loves giving her readers books with unexpected twists and turns, but (here's a hint) most of her books have the ending spelled out in the first chapter. See if you can figure it out. Part of me is afraid I'm going crazy.
Part of me is scared I'm not, because if I'm not, if what is going on in my nightmares is real, then I've got 99 more problems to deal with.
That's why I can't tell Tina. It's why I can't tell anybody. There is something inside me that will not allow me to have a meaningful conversation with people. It's like part of me is missing. Not just the scary part either. It's like I'm missing some important part of myself that everybody else has and God forgot to put inside me. Like everyone else has a nice awesome soul and I have… Hart.
So not a fair trade.
I sit up straighter and place my hands on the keyboard, ready to tell Tina something without telling her anything at all. It's how humans communicate, right? I'll tell her that, yeah, I'm having some anxiety issues. It's the second full week of college, of living with Sam, of being away from home. College assignments are different from high school, and I'm a little stressed about doing well on them. I won't tell her about Sam or the weird fight we had last night. Almost like he wanted to pick it so I'd go upstairs and leave him alone. I'll tell her it's anxiety and not that I haven't slept more than two hours a night in a week. I'll tell her a lot of things because she is my friend and that's what friends do.
They lie to each other so they can make each other feel good.
@sullyGray I'm fine. Really. Just Monday morning, kwim? I'm ready for it to be Friday again. Whoot!
@tinaM Tell me about it! Mondays are so hard! Gotta go. Talk to you later. Have a great day!
@sullyGray You too!!!!!!
And then I add some smiley emoticons, because that's just what a person does. I hit send and lean back in my computer chair. Monday morning. Time for Professor Mitchell's class. Time to see Marcy, AKA the best Teacher's Assistant in the world, and listen to the professor talk about some random event that happened in the Civil War. Because that's what he does. He talks about random events that didn't matter to anybody but does it in such a way that you care. Professor Mitchell is one of those teachers who just makes you want to learn, makes you want to listen. He has something special about him. Something no other teacher has had, and I've only had him three times. I have his class Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. A great way to start the week, and a great way to end it.
Can't exactly say enough about Professor Mitchell. I mean, he's him.
Sweet, intelligent, awesome, and at least twenty years older than me. Handsome in that old guy way. Not that I'd want anything to do with him—not in that way. Not feelin' that, but I know some other people in the class wouldn't mind.
The professor loves talking about the Civil War. More than just the war, the families involved, the real people behind the "Hollywood machine," as he calls it.
I shut down my computer and stretch in my chair. Yeah, it's Monday, but it'll be a good Monday. It will. I'll go to class with a positive attitude. I'll listen. I'll take notes. I'll text Sam—funny how he's not sent me one before now—and I'll be happy.
Or, at the very least, I'll pretend to be happy.
That's all people really want, right?
Sunshine. Marcy, the T.A. for Professor Mitchell. Tina. Sam—somewhere. I'm living my life. I'm moving on. I'm totally ignoring Hart, who is currently whispering in my head about candles.
I'm fine.
I'm totally normal.

                                               THIS WEEK'S PROMPT POST

One of my biggest pet-peeves in books (and movies/tv shows) is when main characters die! I know, I know it happens in real life so it's only fitting that it happens in stories too, right? The problem is I'm a hopeless romantic which makes me a HEA addict. I guess I fell for "Once upon a time...they live happily ever after" so much so that I believe every story she end that way. I can name one book(but I won't giveaway spoiler but hint:also a movie) that started book 1 and 2 in the heroine's POV then wrote book 3 in both the heroine and hero's POV because she needed the hero to finish the story after the heroine died! That is the ONLY book I every literally threw across the room!

As she makes her first fumbling steps into society, she meets the handsome young cad Justin Lestrade and his world tears her perceptions apart.  “Justin?” He turned as she spoke, “I think you should pursue Melissa De Vire.”
He dropped what he had been holding and walked towards her.
“What?” Utter shock permeated his tones and he stared down at her as though he could not believe what he had just heard. “You must be mad.”
“No, just practical.” Unconcerned by the anger on his face, Emily reached down and pulled the gold bracelet back onto her wrist. “You like her, that much is obvious and she seems to have some interest in you, despite her transparent denials.”
For a long moment, Justin said nothing, stunned by the words that were coming out of Emily’s mouth. “Haven’t you just convinced me that this existence is so much hell, that you would lie with someone you don’t care for just to rid yourself of it? Why would you ask me to pursue someone I couldn’t be with? Do you hate me that much?”
Emily turned away and sat down in one of the chairs. “I don’t hate you Justin, but if you don’t take her and make her yours you will regret it.” She picked up her bonnet and began pulling at the flowers set into it. “Alistair already knows about her, give it a little time and she will be linked with us. I’d much rather you drag her along rather than leave her to be fodder for John.”
“So how does my brother know about Melissa?” Justin’s voice was dangerously quiet as he stood opposite her. “Have you stirred the pot again?” He turned and slammed his fist into the wall. “I thought you were past these petty games. Real people are at stake.”
“Yes.” She stood and faced him. “Real people are at stake and if you do not act this time, John will merely take her from you in the same way he took Anna.” She grabbed his fist and brushed the drops of blood from the knuckles. “Do you not realise yet that there is nothing that you can do to hide her from him.”
“I’ve spoken to her once.” He hoped that she did not see through the lie, “And that has been all. God curse it Emily, she may only be intrigued, do not turn this into a grand love affair on the basis of one conversation.” He pulled his hand free and seized the back of her neck. “If you start this, you’d better be prepared to face the consequences.”
Emily laughed in his face. “Don’t threaten me darling, I won’t take it.” Her hand snaked around his wrist and she pressed hard on the joints, causing him to gasp in pain. “I will not spend the next few decades suffering from your ill temper. Don’t forget love, that I know you almost as well as you know yourself.”
Justin allowed his hand to drop from her skin and whispered. “Then why would push this? I am interested yes, but I know that I can’t have her. John need only know that I flirted with her, as I do with many women.”
“I push because John will know regardless. He has his spies and he will find out.”

About the Author
When I was a child, I made up games and characters when my sister and I played with dolls. As I grew older, I would make up scenarios and scenes, fully intending to write them down but never finding the time. In my late teens, I discovered the world of role playing and settled into an avid ‘geeky’ life of D&D, comics, sci-fi and fantasy fiction. Years passed and I finally gave voice to the stories in my head. I write romance, fantasy, action and adventure. I love tales of steampunk and history, tales of magical powers and dark curses lurking in the shadows. Though The Black Lotus is not my first attempt at a novel, it is the first I have finished.

And some fun facts about me:

I sew.
My favourite Disney film is Atlantis.
I’ve been a film extra and stood 5 feet away from Sam Rockwell.
Babylon 5 is my fave sci-fi show.
I cried at the end of Toy Story 3.
